Waterford Yacht Club Newsletter – October 2022

Recent Events

Happy Hour – Simone and Michael Gordon took a big chance and opened-up their wonderful Dickinson Bayou residence to the membership.  It was a perfect bayou style social event, peaceful water and delicious food.  But the water got rough as they hosted the first WYC bayou kayak race.  It was a technical course that required lots of maneuvers which Commodore Sean and Michelle Weidner overcame to win. The membership tried to be well behaved, nobody sank a kayak; but a deck chair did break, and we left behind a galley mess for the Gordons to cleanup. Many thanks to our gracious hosts – Simone and Michael!

Railean Distillery Pirate Party – Many would be pirates, Pittsburgh baseball fans, and tourists assembled at the Buccaneer Bar to enjoy adult beverages backed by pizza and appetizer boards.  The pirates were all dressed in their finest and quite cordial too.  There were no sword fights and only one pistol duel, luckily both missed. After ‘last call’ WYC set sail to other Kemah watering holes.  Arrgh!

On the Horizon

Chilli Cookoff (Saturday November 12 6:30pm – 9:00) Marina temperatures are cooling off, but we’ll keep it hot with a chili cookoff featuring bean, no-bean, spicy, mild, and even exotic chilis.  Bring a pot of homemade chili or a side dish to share with members.  In the event of bad weather we’ll move into the Icehouse.  Check your invites for more information.

Redfish Raft-Up (Saturday November 19) Fleet Captain Russell is encouraging WYC boaters to cruise to Redfish Island for a meal, campfire, smores and overnight anchorage. Plan to arrive at Redfish in the late morning anchor or raft-up and,  hail your island uber service on VHF 68 if needed.  The club will provide an entre and a Dutch oven cooking demonstration; please bring a side dish, lawn chair, and if you have one, a dinghy.  Note: should the weather turn against rough we’ll make Saturday December 3rd a backup date.

Volunteers – You can still support the 2022 program and make a small commitment for 2023.  Contact Commodore Sean McDaniel (commodore@waterfordyc.com) and participate.  Together we make it happen!
