Recent Events

Anchoring Seminar – Rear Commodore Steve Nolin arranged for an informative anchoring seminar.  The pros and cons of the different anchor types available to us were discussed by Tim Marshall as was his mention of three books for further information.

  • Complete Anchoring Handbook
  • Anchoring: A Ground Tackler’s Apprentice
  • Rigging Modern Anchors

Birthday Bash – Our 27th celebration had an Oktoberfest theme this year, thanks to hosts Dion and Lisa Laurent, and treasurer Vickie Voorhies.  True to tradition there were plenty of brats, beer and German chocolate cakes for the 26 members who attended.  Any Oktoberfest must have a contest of strength; Tina Pantoja showed hers by winning the beer stein lifting contest.  We cheered her on as well as competitor Liz Eisemann and emptied our own steins at the same time.

In addition, members participated in a 50/50 fund raising event.  Amy Holdaway had the winning ticket and graciously donated her winnings back to the Galveston Bay Foundation.  Thank you Amy and all who purchased tickets; the Foundation received all the proceeds, a total of $400.  It was a pretty night at the marina, a good time was had by all.

New Members – Chuck and Laura LaBounty onboard the s/v Endless Summer have joined our club.  Stop by their boat on pier 14, slip 37 and say “Ahoy”.

WYC Board Meeting – Your club officers held the monthly meeting to discuss and plan future activities.  A key topic was (and is) the 2027 club officers.  Now is a good time to volunteer or at least ask about future club leadership.

On the Horizon

Holiday Cocktail Contest Saturday November 7 – Let’s begin the holiday season with a beverage contest featuring our favorite spirits.  Host Laurie Diehl will host the event and order pizza from Sundance Grill to help absorb any excess alcohol.  Please respond to the Evite so she can better plan the pie purchase.

Fabric Restoration Saturday November 14 10:30 Sundance Grill – Plan on attending this very practical presentation.  We’ll learn about handy methods and products to help maintain, repair and restore boat and home fabrics.

Christmas Parade Happy Hour Saturday December 12 – Tony and Karen Townsend will again open their home to us for a happy hour and viewing of the Nassau Bay fireworks and Christmas boat parade behind their home.  Bring a tasty dish to share with members and enjoy a relaxing evening on their patio.

Save the Date! Officers Election and Commodore’s Ball Sundance Grill Saturday January 23 – This is easily our busiest day of the year.  In the morning the membership gathers to vote for the incoming 2027 WYC board members and in the evening we’ll celebrate the outgoing 2026 Commodore and board. The party theme is ‘The Reef’ and includes dinner and dancing.  Tickets will go on sale in December.  Mermaids are welcomed!
