August Events
Happy Hour Aug. 7th – About two dozen members stopped by to visit and enjoy snacks and hosts Laurie Diehl and Daniel Knierian’s delicious, but labor intensive margaritas.
Dive-In-Movie Night Aug. 18th – Poolside at the Sundance Grill was nearly full as members and marina boaters enjoyed the water, food, social time, and WYCs presentation of the movie “Captain Ron”. Thanks to WYC Social Director Monique Henson for making the arrangements. Movie set relics of the Formosa 51 Ketch can still be seen in the marina.
Cardboard/Plastic Boat Regretta, Aug. 22nd – Five experimental marine architects designed, built, and successfully floated their dinghies in WYC’s 2020 Regretta. More than sixty people enjoyed the intense competition from the Pavilion B grandstand and the dock. Congratulations to the participants, team Alexa Hayward, Michelle Weidner, Mike Pantoja, team Voorhies and winner Scott Taylor. Scott’s design was so fast he created a wake while paddling. It was an epic competition between skippers Alexa, Michelle, and Mike for second place. Amongst the three there were so many collisions and water leaks someone should have called the Coast Guard. But through it all Michelle prevailed and took second. Regrettably the Voorhies’ Viking dinghy only managed to do circles at the dock. Color commentary for the event was provided by past WYC Commodore Robert Donley. Awards were given out to the skippers for first place, most creative and the hard luck boats.
September Outlook
Happy Hour: Friday Sept. 4th 6:30 Pavilion B – Stop by and share a B.Y.O.B. beverage, appetizer and a membership mingle. Social distancing is observed.
Bloody Mary & Mimosas: Sunday Sept. 6th at 9:00 am Pavilion B – Even in the summer heat, this WYC event is totally cool. Catch-up on boating news as you enjoy a beverage, especially the one with bacon in it. Social distancing will be observed.
Gel Coat Repair Clinic: Saturday Sept. 19th 10:00 Pavilion B – Once again Daniel Knierian will share his boating knowledge with members. Maybe your boat will be lucky enough to be the subject of his repair demonstration.
Birthday Bash & Charity Fundraiser: Saturday Sept. 26th 6:00pm Sundance Grill – We will be celebrating Waterford Yacht Club’s 21st anniversary. It will be a pirate themed party and fundraiser benefiting the Sea Scouts. Dinner will be served at the Sundance Grill along with pirate games of skill and chance. Be sure to bring some pirate booty (or plastic) for donations for our selected charity for 2020 “Sea Scouts” . Social distancing will be observed.
