Waterford Yacht Club Newsletter – November 2022

Recent Events

Chili Cookoff – Almost two dozen members gathered on a cool night in Pavilion B for a delicious assortment of warm to spicy hot chilis and side dishes.  From the seven chilis offered members picked two as their favorites earning Amy Holdaway and Elfie Boersma prizes.

Redfish Island – Wind and rain caused a delay of our November headliner event to December.  It was worth the wait as this time, morning fog was the only issue.  Eight boats safely maneuvered to the island anchorage for our picnic.  Nineteen members and guests enjoyed the island gathering, meal and campfire: many thanks to Elfie Boresma, and Fleet Captain Russell.  Later a mist gathered, and some boats left for Clear Lake, but six boats stayed to enjoy the late campfire and overnight anchorage.  Dinghy taxi service to and from the island was excellent – nobody fell into the water.

Membership – Brad Hall and Heidi Young have joined.  His sailing vessel Westwind is on pier 14, in slip 11.  Stop by and welcome them sometime soon.

On the Horizon

Holiday Deserts – Friday, 7:00pm December 9th, Pavilion B. Join in on a variety of tasty, sweet deserts and beverages as member bring their best holiday cheer to this contest.  Longtime member Elfie Boresma has arranged the event and will award prizes for our favorites.  As we eat, drink and mingle we’ll also enjoy the holiday boat lights spread throughout the marina.  If you can, please add to the contest entries.  At WYC everyone is a winner!

Annual Business Meeting Saturday 10:00am January 14 at the Sundance Grill II – Let’s review 2022 activities and vote for the members who will lead our club in 2023.  The restaurant will serve coffee, lox and bagels.  Please attend, it is the perfect time to voice your 2023 event ideas and a quorum is needed to conduct club business.  You’ve noticed inflation in your household budget and the same is true for club activities.  An annual dues increase of $25, from $125 to $150 (effective Feb. 1st) will be on the ballot for your approval.  It will be the first membership fee increase in many years.

Annual Commodore’s Ball Saturday January 14 6:00pm – 10:00 at the South Shore Opus Bistro and Steakhouse – Anchors Aweigh!  Along with the nice setting, our boating friends, three course meal, cash bar and DJ music, WYC will recognize its past Commodores.  Online tickets are $65 each for WYC members and $75 each for guests.  The tickets are available through Eventbrite url: Tickets.  Please RSVP by 5:00pm Thursday January 12.  After five attire is requested.

Marine Insurance Saturday 21, 10:00am-11:00 at Sundance Grill II.  Local marine insurance agent Dennis Onstott will speak to the membership about boat insurance, especially the fine print.  The more we know about this mandatory expense the better.  Our new Rear Commodore (education) volunteer Howard Eisemann will be on hand to hear your suggestions on future education events.

Volunteers – The 2023 program is now being assembled.  You can support the program by volunteering to help with one or more event and become a Waterford Yachtie (hat included). Our organization meeting will be held following the Annual Business on Saturday January 14th, about 10:30am.  Many of you have already signed up and a few more are still needed.  Contact Vice Commodore Daven Voorhies (vicecommodore@waterfordyc.com) to participate and plan to attend, together we make it 2023 the best!
