First Annual WYC Cruise Week

On the weekends of May 11-12 and May 18-19

Yes, on back-to-back weekends … with “beyond-the-bay” destinations … plus scheduled WYC events.  Galveston, Freeport and the San Bernard River are all in the plan.  It’s a plan with a multitude of options so that you can participate to any level that suits your schedule and satisfies your coastal cruising desires.  If you’ve been wanting to cruise beyond the confines of Galveston Bay, but can’t commit to taking a whole week off to do it, then this is the cruise for you!  The cruise has two main parts:

1.      Cruise to Freeport over the weekend of May 11th and 12th – with a visit to the San Bernard River planned for the 11th.

Then, if you choose, berth your boat at Bridge Harbor Marina for the weekdays from May 13 to 17th.  We are arranging special rates and will coordinate car or van transportation between Freeport and WYC.  Details will be finalized when we know the interest.

Cruise back to Kemah over the weekend of May 18th and 19th – with a stopover in Galveston, if you prefer

With these planned WYC activities:

Saturday, May 11th---An afternoon rendezvous in the San Bernard River. Then at dusk, a big WYC event: “The Testing Of Our Flare Guns” (photographs highly recommended), followed by the (completely optional) consumption of adult beverages … hopefully with everyone adhering to this carefully prescribed order of activities.

Saturday, May 18th- Poolside get together at Bridge Harbor with beverages provided by WYC.  Even if you can’t make the cruise this is a chance to drive down and visit the marina … and hear some fresh cruising stories (not the “aged” ones we’ve heard all winter!).  It’s less than an hour down 288 … and there’s even a scenic route that we’ll publish to add to your land cruise adventure!

As we said, it’s a plan with many possible variations:  come down in the middle of the week … cruise down one day and back the next … take a 3-day weekend … or two! … go offshore … stay the whole week.  It’s up to you!  As individual plans firm up, we’ll try to coordinate groups (even flotillas!) to make the passages down and back more adventurous.

So what are you waiting for? … the best weather window of the year … moderate temperatures … moderate tides … good opportunities for “fleet sailing” down and back … convenient accommodations and transportation arrangements … and a Saturday Night Get Together to boot.  It’s about the best this part of the coast has to offer.  Sign up soon!

We’d like to hear from you by April 8th , 2002 so we can make an initial confirmation of our slip reservations for Bridge Harbor.  It’s not necessary to pick exactly your cruise plan at this time, just an indication that you plan to participate.   Please call the WYC "receptionist" at 281.266.1976 to indicate your interest in this event.

Call Vernon Downing at 281 482-3129   … or e-mail at vwdowning@academicplanet.com  for additional information.   And be sure to visit the WYC web site for even more information.  We’ll be updating it regularly as more plan details become available.
