WATERFORD YACHT CLUB SATURDAY NIGHT STEAK SOCIAL!
By Lyn Dreisbach
As a smoky but delectable aroma wafted thru the air at Waterford Harbor on Saturday night, it was apparent it was STEAK NIGHT with the Waterford Yacht Club! Over 76 famished & appreciative members enjoyed some steaks grilled to perfection, baked potatoes with all the fixins and a plentiful array of fabulous side dishes and desserts! Wearing fashionable WYC logo aprons, the Waterford Board grilled, hosted and entertained their way thru the evening in Pavilion A @ Waterford Harbor.
The WYC day actually began with the first “Shakedown Cruise” of this years’ boating season with Fleet Captain Tom Mooney organizing & leading a group of boats to a Redfish Island Raft Up and luncheon. Under sunny blue skies and 10-20 knot winds (gusting to 30), several sailboats used the opportunity to test new sails, roller furling, windlass, new anchors and more. Winds were conducive for some full sails and exciting heeling. Of course, there are always those entertaining sailor stories going around which caught everyone’s attention. It was soon determined the best (saddest?) Hard Luck Award for their humorous escapades had to be awarded to Dan & Jan Wampler hands down with their windlass anchoring tale and more! Sailors and power boaters alike all love a good boating story when it happens to someone else, unfortunately because we can all relate!
It was a beautiful evening in the Pavilion @ the Harbor with the sounds of Steel Drum music and a gorgeous red hued setting sun that made for a picture perfect end to a boaters picture perfect boating day! Diners lingered to socialize and enjoy a libation of their choice, while the Ships Store did a brisk business well into the evening!
Special Thanks to our 2011 Social Director Janis Sampson who organized and meticulously arranged & orchestrated the evening’s menu & event. Janis did an outstanding job to the appreciation of us all! Jennifer Stillman & Dawn Jackson kept the arrival line moving as new memberships checked in. Master grillers Scott Stillman, Richard Bruce, Tony Townsend & Karen Townsend kept us enjoying those smoky grilled flavors well into the night. Richard never did get his grill to stay lit (that darn boaters wind!), but the grilling team kept things moving. Commodore Lorraine Grubbs & Vice Commodore Dawn Jackson announced and awarded prizes and helped keep the evening flowing and entertaining. Lyn (& David) kept the Ships Store open until after dark with logo merchandise being in high demand! Door prizes for wearing your name lanyards were won by three lucky members, SO REMEMBER to wear those lanyards & name tags at future events!
Thank you to everyone who attended, brought a side dish, grilled steaks, purchased logo merchandise, or simply enjoyed sharing warm conversations. It is all of you that help make our events a success!! Get out on the bay and enjoy these wonderful Spring days!
