Rear Commodore

Ross Gauld

Fleet Captain:

Rus Records

Rus started his boating career by paddling home-made pirogues around the bayous of South Louisiana.  He created his first sailboat by plugging the drain holes his Dad had drilled in an old 12 foot rowboat to make it into a sand-box, and adding a ketch rig including two masts, a bowsprit, and six sails.  He hadn’t yet figured out sail trim, so the sails were all nailed to the braces and couldn’t be adjusted.   It worked great downwind, though.  After his first trip down the bayou behind a strong North wind, he went about 12 miles south and couldn’t figure out a way of sailing it back.  It’s probably still there, on the shore of the Vermilion River north of Abbeville. He gradually worked his way up the sailboat food chain until he could afford a real sailboat, a new 1987 Catalina 27 “Lost Ark” that he and wife Sandy bought to sail the Tennessee River at Huntsville, AL.   After being transferred to Dallas, he saw his first Vagabond 47 ketch which looked like his original vision of a sailboat cum sandbox, though much bigger.  After being sent down the river to Houston, Rus and Sandy bought his own Vagabond 47 “Voyager” and they joined Waterford Yacht Club in 2000 on a bet.  They sailed “Voyager” all over the Gulf of Mexico, including 7 Harvest Moon Regattas (2 First Place in Class), and a three-week trip to Veracruz in 2000.    On the way back, they got caught in a tropical storm off Tampico, and Sandy and the boys flew back home, leaving Rus and his 1 crew member to sail all the way back. Rus served as Fleet Captain back in 2004 and as Commodore in 2005, and retired after that until this year.  Rus and Sandy sold ketch Voyager in 2009 after ten years, fell to the “Dark Side” and currently own “Voyager II”, a Performance Trawler 42 Trawler.  Rus has a 100 Ton USCG Master License, and teaches the WYC “Night Time in the Ship Channel” radar course in August each year.  Some say he is a passable cook as well.
