Waterford Yacht Club 2006 Offats Bayou Cruise

This year we decided to coordinate the Moody Gardens/Offats Bayou Cruise with Lone Star Air Show. Aside from our best planning efforts there were two things beyond our control; the weather and the Galveston railroad bridge.

It seems that every time we plan a trip to Offats Bayou the weather doesn’t cooperate and this is especially true with this trip. The wind was blowing Friday out of the Southeast 25-30 knots and this made for some very choppy waters with a strong current & slow, wet motoring. Then we found out the Galveston railroad bridge was shut down due to a barge accident. After all that, only 4 out of the 14 planned boats made it down. But that didn’t dampen our spirits.

For those of us that returned back to Waterford we made our makeshift potluck dinner on pier 15 and had a good time. After many phone calls & moral support I was able to round up the troops to head back down by car after the front came through on Saturday and make it in time for some of the air show. Afterwards, everyone stayed for happy hour and some great barbeque. By that time the weather finally cooperated and was quite enjoyable that evening.

I commend the four boats that made it down (Voyager II, Bear with me, Mele Kai and SuseaQ) as well as the rest of the group who patiently waited for the weather to subside and drive down on Saturday. Lets hope for better weather next time!
